Role Description
Scientist (JL 60) / Senior Scientist (JL 70)– Veterinary Flow Cytometry Scientist & Immunologist
The Zoetis Global Therapeutics 4 Livestock Health group, within Veterinary Medicine Research and Development, seeks to discover medicines (prophylactic, therapeutic and biopharmaceutical) for veterinary applications. The team works across various therapeutic areas and is focused on understanding the immunological basis of chronic inflammation, infectious/non-infectious disease and host-pathogen interactions in order to identify, evaluate and progress therapeutic targets and substrates for livestock (cattle, swine and poultry) and supporting companion animals derm anti-infective portfolio (canine, feline and equine). We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Veterinary Flow Cytometry Scientist with a degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in multicolor flow cytometry, panel design, sample preparation, instrument operation, data analysis, assay development and standardization of equipment. Additionally, the successful candidate will contribute to ongoing research and development programs across a variety of veterinary animal species. This role requires expertise in multi-color flow cytometry, panel design, troubleshooting, and data interpretation, as well as experience with flow cytometry software and instrumentation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide Flow Analysis Support for in vitro and clinical samples across multiple species and TA’s.
- Experimental Design and Execution: Develop and optimize multi-parameter flow cytometry panels for various applications requiring minimal supervision, including immunophenotyping, cell cycle analysis, apoptosis, and functional assays for both livestock and companion animal species.
- Data Analysis and Interpretation: Process and analyze data using flow cytometry software (e.g., FlowJo, FCS Express, Cytobank) and provide detailed reports and presentations.
- Perform Required Maintenance: Operate, calibrate, clean and troubleshoot flow cytometers (e.g., BD, Beckman Coulter, Cytek, etc.), ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime.
- Protocol Development and Compliance: Develop and standardize protocols, maintain accurate documentation, and ensure compliance with biosafety and regulatory standards.
- Technology Evaluation and Innovation: Stay updated on advancements in flow cytometry technology, suggest new equipment, automation and methodologies.
- Perform antibody conjugations and purifications following standardized protocols as required.
- Collaboration & Training: Work closely with research teams, clinicians, and external partners to support experimental needs, and train staff in flow cytometry techniques.
- Provide resource for assay validation services, to include standardized titration optimization experiments and clone cross reactivity confirmation.
- Responsible for maintenance of instrument specific consumable supplies such as cleaning reagents, calibration beads sheath fluids and spare parts. Oversee and maintain reagent inventories including antibody stocks, buffers and conjugation kits.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum
BSc. (with 5+ years of relevant expertise in veterinary flow cytometry), or Master (with 5+ years of relevant experience) or PhD (with 0-2 years of experience in academia, biotech or pharmaceutical industry) in Veterinary Immunology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology or related field with research focus on target identification/validation, immunoscreening assays and discovery of immuno-therapeutics.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in veterinary flow cytometry, preferably in research, clinical, or industry setting.
- Experience in running multi-color panels across multiple species, and developing purpose specific gating strategies.
- Proficient in operating flow cytometers (e.g.Cytek Aurora, BioRad ZE5, BD Canto, BD, Symphony, BD Accuri.).
- Experienced in flow cytometry data analysis tools such as FlowJo, Cytobank, or FCS Express, spectral flow and high-dimensional data analysis.
- Familiar with acquisition software platforms such as Diva, Everest or SpecraFlow
- Skilled with Flow cytometry techniques including cell sorting, intracellular staining, ROS detection and apoptosis characterization methods.
- Familiarity with computational flow cytometry approaches (e.g., FlowJo, t-SNE, UMAP, FlowSOM).
- Experienced in troubleshooting skills for instrumentation, staining protocols, and data quality issues.
Other skill sets desired:
- Broad knowledge of cellular and molecular immunology, including familiarity in humoral and cellular immunology, and immunology of inflammation.
- Experience/knowledge in identification of innate and adaptive immune mechanisms of inflammatory, autoimmune and infectious/non-infectious diseases.
- Hands-on experience in cellular assay development and proficiency with standard assay formats (e.g. Incucyte imaging, luminescence-/fluorescence-based cellular readouts, immunohistochemistry, receptor binding affinity and effector function) in primary cell culture systems.
- Experience in laboratory automation capabilities (e.g. Agilent systems, iDot).
- Excellent teamwork skills, functioning well with immediate group, project teams, and diverse departments across the organization.
- Independent, able to prioritize work and work efficiently, design experiments with minimal supervision, and able to work across teams remotely and face-to-face.
