Job Title: Lead-Chick Processing Job Grade: Class 3
FLSA Status: Nonexempt Position reports to: Assistant Hatchery Mgr Location: Wadesboro Hatchery
Schedule: Responsibilities may occasionally require an adjusted work schedule. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday including holidays, beginning at 4:45AM until job is complete. This position averages 40 hours per week. Hours are subject to change depending on needs of the hatchery.
Position Summary:
Plan and coordinate the activities of team members in the chick room while ensuring all timelines and quality standards are met.
Essential Duties and Responsibilties:
- Plan and coordinate the activity of team members who are responsible for the processing of all chickens including: grading, vaccination, and toe trim. (60%)
- Complete customer paperwork including work orders, hatch percentages and export paperwork. handles, addresses complaints and resolves problems. (15%)
- Ensure that each facility is getting the correct number of chicks ordered, services requested, and that all timelines are being met. (15%)
- Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice. Such as: Operate a high pressure and regular water hose, make and cut vitamin gel, mix vaccine, and maintain a clean and organized work area. (10%)
Biosecurity/Animal Welfare Requirements/Safety Requirements:
- The jobsite is a biosecure environment which requires showering, changing clothing and footwear before entering the facility. Appropriate clothing and footwear is provided by the Company. No jewelry may be worn on the jobsite except for medical ID jewelry. Must be willing to sign an agreement to avoid any avian species (chickens, ducks, birds, etc.). Must be willing to sign and abide by the Company Biosecurity and Company Animal Welfare Guidelines. Will be trained to recognize and comply with all safety procedures.
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: Must be able to read, write, and have simple math skills.
- Experience: Six months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- The successful candidate(s) must be willing and able to perform the physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Physical: Must use safe lifting techniques. Must regularly push or pull basket of chicks weighing up to 125 lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand majority of shift (concrete floor); walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; bend over; talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
- Personal Protective Equipment Required: Safety goggles, face shield, chemical gloves, waterproof apron, and rubber boots are required when handling chemicals. Ear plugs will be used as needed.
- Chemicals Commonly Used: Formaldehyde is in use at the facility, disinfectant, lubricants and virocid.
- Environment: Required to work on wet, slippery surfaces and also in hot, dry, dusty, wet and cold environments.
General Sign Off: The employee is expected to adhere to all company policies. Failure to perform this job to above above standards could lead to progressive discipline up to and including termination.
Qualified applicants must have at least one year of work experience with one employer over the past three years with no gaps in employment of over six months. (Exceptions are made for layoffs, attending school, or the birth of a child.) Candidates with agricultural or production experience will be considered preferred.

This position is responsible for assisting the Supervisor in coordination of the daily responsibilities of the department by insuring the Supervisor’s instructions are communicated to the team members and carried out timely and correctly. This position will also monitor all equipment to insure it is working properly and notify the supervisor of any needed maintenance while maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to Tyson policies and procedures.
