The Veterinary Technician (VT) is a key player on the health care provider team, supporting the delivery of patient care and client education to help the team run effectively and efficiently. The VT applies a broad knowledge of hospital operations, procedures and policies, animal science, medicine, and husbandry, and a basic knowledge of pharmacology. The VT must communicate across the health care team, successfully restrain animals, complete clinical laboratory tests, use multiple radiology techniques, administer and monitor anesthesia, prepare for and assist in surgery, perform dental procedures, deliver compassionate nursing care, and monitor hospitalized cases. VTs must build positive, professional relationships with clients and staff members.

All position applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license in Ohio. VTs that are licensed must maintain their qualifications through continuing education, and all VTs will work under veterinary supervision. Typing skills and some computer knowledge is required. The VT position requires lifting, carrying and restraining animals (assistance by other staff will be provided for animals over 40 lbs.), as well as standing for extended periods of time or working in a squatting position. The job may expose the applicant to unpleasant odors, noises, and risks – although every effort is made to minimize – include bites, scratches or contagious diseases.
