About Scott Stock Farm

Scott Stock Farm (SSF) is a family run operation with Black and Red Angus & Charolais genetics. The Scott family have been breeding cattle for over 40 years. It is owned by Jonathan and Camille Scott along with their children; daughter Shelby and son Bow. SSF consists of 500 mother cows.

Artificial Insemination (AI) is a very big part of our breeding program. We AI all our cows on their first cycle to some of the top AI sires in North America and then they are kicked out with our selected herd sires that we have purchased. Although AI is very time consuming, we feel it allows us to bring in new proven genetics with high accuracies. We time breed our heifers each year and the cows are bred on natural heat.

We host an annual Bull Sale every March held at our Farm. It is a video sale and we market around 100 bulls. Some years we also market a select group of commercial heifers. We have one of the best meals with AAA steaks, and tasty homemade pies.

The Opportunity -

Our Farm/Ranch Hand will work side by side with the Owner to complete daily and weekly operational activities in all aspects of the farm. We are looking for a hard-working, self-motivated, honest, and responsible person to work on cow/calf and hay operation.

Punctuality is critically important to employer. Must be flexible with the seasons. Calving and haying specifically. June to August is usually our quieter season. Compensation determined by experience.

Key Job Functions:

Farm/Ranch Operations (approximately 60% of weekly time)

Day to day operations of the Farm – alongside the Owner, tackling daily tasks while ensuring scheduling and project objectives are achieved
Farm operational tasks including both crop and livestock production, utilizing appropriate equipment, machinery, and tools required to effectively perform these tasks
Coordinating routine farm activities and asset maintenance
Oversee cleaning and maintenance of facilities and equipment, including the development of routine maintenance schedules
Provide input and recommendations with crop planning, grazing plans, feed forecasting, and livestock breeding plans

Livestock/Animal Husbandry & Care, Crop Production, (approximately 40% of weekly time)

Lead grain inventory management, including monitoring feed/grain inventory
Monitor animal welfare and health; and recommend treatments as required
Assistance with calving
Monitor animal condition during pen checking, watching for illness, and in the event of illness working to determine cause - ensure leading practices of care provided to all livestock
Report any health status changes to the Owners including recommendations to escalate to vet consultation
Work collaboratively with the Owner to liaise with external consultants and service providers as needed

Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

A minimum of 5 years related work experience in a mixed livestock and land-based farm operation is preferred
Ability to stand and bend for extended periods of time and lift 50+ lbs
Crop production experience with a base knowledge of agronomic principles and practices
Strong mechanical, electrical, and general maintenance skills and knowledge are required.
Demonstrate animal husbandry experience and ability to ensure livestock well-being including the diagnosis and treatment of any health concerns in a pasture and feedlot setting
High performance standards with excellent work ethic
Attention to detail and cleanliness
Strong communication skills
Class 3 Driver's license with Air Endorsement - comfortable operating trailers including large farm equipment.
A Class 1 Driver’s License with livestock hauling experience is an asset.

Available to work outside of regular office hours including weekends plus a rotation for “on-call” for after hours call outs
