Summary
Second Chance Humane Society is seeking a full-time veterinary technician to help grow our full-service clinic and shelter operations. Through your work, you will help to prevent suffering, alleviate suffering, maximize our impact, and enhance the dignity of our clients in a manner that promotes the mission of Second Chance Humane Society: Connecting Pets, People & Community While Saving Lives.
Duties and Responsibilities
General Veterinary Technician Duties:
- Assist Veterinarian or Clinic Manager in examinations and treatment of animals
- Induce and prep animals for surgery with or without supervision
- Monitor anesthesia
- Proper handling and restraint of animals, including feral cats and aggressive dogs
- Proficiency in venipuncture, IV catheter placement, drawing up drugs, and injections
- Proper cleaning and sanitizing techniques
- Have a thorough understanding of the equipment and tools commonly used in veterinary practice, such as radiology equipment, dental machines, anesthesia monitoring equipment, fluid pumps, etc.
- Proficiency in performing in-house testing, such as snap tests, fecal flotations, in-house blood testing
- Ability to perform dental scaling/polishing, wound cleaning, ear cleaning, nail trims, and other basic Vet Tech skills
- Fill prescriptions as requested by the Doctor
- Basic Medical Math Skills
Shelter Medicine Duties:
- Work to ensure the best possible environment and outcomes for shelter animals
- Assist in educating staff about shelter intake, medical protocols, and proper cleaning/sanitizing
- Oversee intake exams for ourshelter animals
- Keep shelter animals up to date on vaccinations, dewormings, microchips, and in-house blood tests
- In times of Veterinarian’s or Clinic Manager absence, provide staff advice and basic treatment protocols for sick or injured shelter pets
- Maintain proper medical records of shelter animals in ShelterLuv
Wellness Clinical Duties:
- Provide excellent customer service and care to both clients and pets
- Obtain a proper medical history and obtain the patient'svitals
- Educate clients about the value of preventative care, such as heartworm and flea/tick prevention
- Assist Veterinarian or Clinic Manager with exams, vaccinations, and other veterinary medical procedures
- Evaluate vaccine schedules to interpret what vaccines a pet needs
- Educate clients at time of surgery intake and discharge
- Ensure that the clinic is stocked appropriately
- Assist Clinic Manager in returning phone calls and scheduling appointments
People Care Duties:

Communication occurs through face to face, telephone, and electronic interactions with the general public and SCHS business partners. Other Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.
Additional Requirements
- Vet technician experience required, surgical and anesthetic monitoring experience preferred, CPR experience preferred. Degree of experience negotiable, willing to train the right individual
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn the software programs, ProVet and ShelterLuv

Salary and Benefits
- Starting hourly rate: $18-21/hour, depending on experience
- Commitment: 40 hours per week, schedule to be determined but weekend work to be required occasionally
