Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in animal care and veterinary practices, demonstrating both technical skills and a genuine love for animals. This role involves working closely with veterinarians and other shelter staff to provide high-quality medical care to dogs and cats, ensuring their health and well-being.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during examinations and surgical procedures
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed
- Perform laboratory tests and analyze results
- Monitor animal vital signs and post-operative recovery
- Provide proper animal restraint during procedures
- Maintain accurate medical records for each patient
- Educate pet owners and adopters, shelter Animal Care Team Members, and foster providers on proper care and treatment protocols
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the clinic and other medical areas
- Handle animal species with care, specifically dogs and cats
Skills
Candidates should possess a combination of essential skills including:
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in Washington
- Prior veterinary technician experience is highly valued, preferably in animal shelter or high-volume settings
- Kennel experience to ensure proper animal housing and care
- Knowledge of dental terminology for dental procedures
- Understanding of animal husbandry practices for optimal health management
- Experience in veterinary critical care for emergency situations
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques for diagnostic testing
- General veterinary experience with various animal species but specifically dogs and cats
- Strong dog handling skills to ensure safe interactions during treatments
- Comprehensive knowledge of veterinary terminology to communicate effectively within the team
- Understanding of animal physiology to assess health conditions accurately
- Skills in animal catheterization for fluid administration or diagnostics
- Ability to perform animal restraint techniques safely and humanely
- Knowledge of animal anatomy for effective treatment planning
- Experience in pet care practices including grooming
- Proficient in aseptic techniques to maintain sterile environments during procedures
Compensation & Benefits:
- Hourly wage: $26 - $29 DOE
- 25+ hours a week receives 1-week paid vacation year one / 2-weeks paid vacation year two after 60-day probationary period
