Buffalo Plains Cattle Co is searching for full-time Pen Riders to join our progressive and growing team. We are located in Saskatchewan, 11 km west of Bethune, 62 km from Regina, and 39 km from Moose Jaw. Employee housing is available to rent on an individual basis close by. As a Pen Rider, you are responsible for the health and welfare of cattle in the feedlot while utilizing our modern treatment record system to effectively treat and manage sick and/or injured cattle in the feedlot.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
On horseback, riding through pens, inspecting cattle, and making decisions about pulling animals to be hospitalized. This is done daily regardless of weather conditions to monitor animal health.
Diagnosing health concerns & treating accordingly.
Computer data entry in regards to treatments done on animals
Move cattle for shipment or treatment. If shipping, perform accurate head counts, retrieve cattle, and move them to scale and shipping pens.
Conduct pen, water bowl, and bunk inspections. Notify appropriate personnel regarding repairs/maintenance needed.
Induction of new cattle
May operate farm machinery such as a tractor and skid steer. Equipment experience is an asset.
Can assume duties of general feedlot maintenance.
It is preferred if applicants provide their own horse(s) for pen riding but not necessary. The feedlot pays for the horse hay. A bi-weekly horse allowance is provided in addition to a farrier cost allowance. At least 2 years livestock and herd health experience preferred. Must be fluent in English.
Experience/Skills Required:
- Valid driver’s license.
- Good attitude and team player.
- Self-motivated.
- Attention to detail.
- Good communication skills.
- Experience in both recognizing sick and/or injured cattle and the feedlot industry.
- Horse husbandry and handling skills and preference will be given to applicants who already possess horses and tack.
- Cattle handling skills.
- Experience with operating equipment (loader, tractor, etc.) (preferred, but not required).
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:
- Working directly with cattle (on foot and horseback) and horses.
- Repetitive tasks.
- Ability to lift 60 lbs.
- Combination of sitting, standing, and walking.
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Use of computerized treatment system.
