Welcome to Amana Farms!We are hiring a Cow-Calf Team Member - Herdspersonto join our team in Homestead, IA (about a half hour southwest of Cedar Rapids). In this role you will provide all care and management to a functioning cow calf herd as well as be responsible for associate grazing lands, fences and water resources. Additionally, you will provide daily watch and care to cow herds and bull battery.
One of Iowa’s largest contiguous farms, the Amana Farms is made up of 26,000 acres with award-winning crop fields, a 2,000 cow/calf herd, a 4,000 head cattle feedlot, an anaerobic digester, and Iowa’s largest privately held forest. We are located in Homestead, IA (about 20 miles Northwest of Iowa City, IA).

What you will be doing:
- Record keeping for cattle production, enterprise accounting as well as labor and machinery hours.
- Feeding, watering, herding, grazing, castrating, branding, weighing, catching, and loading animals.
- Regularly examine animals to detect disease and injury and separate from herd as needed; treat animals as directed by veterinarian.
- Administer medications, vaccinations or insecticides as appropriate.
- Ensure clean and well-maintained facilities, equipment and vehicles.
- Maintain and repair equipment as needed.
- Work closely with Cow/Calf Division Manager, other Cow/Calf Team Members, and feedlot staff as well as Crop and Forestry employees.
- Communicate relevant information to the Cow/Calf Division Manager and other departments in a timely manner.
- Practice safe workplace practices; follow all Amana Farms and Amana Society safety and other policies.
- Participate in required “on call” rotation for around the clock emergencies.
- Participate in process improvements designed to improve efficiency and the health of Amana Farms cattle.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment throughout the operation.
This job is for you if you have:
- Prior experience working with cow/calf pairs, bulls, and herd management.
- Valid Iowa driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Willingness to assist in all areas of the operation.
- Mechanical knowledge or willingness to learn.
- Must be physically capable of operating all-terrain vehicle during daily work activities.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) regularly and occasionally lift objects (up to 50 pounds) above shoulder height.
- Ability to be in attendance during all critical times of the production stages of beef cattle, including but not limited to: calving, weaning and severe weather events. This may or may not be limited to the normal 55-hour work week.
