Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough examinations of animals to assess their health status, utilizing veterinary terminology and knowledge of animal physiology and anatomy.
- Diagnose medical conditions accurately through clinical assessments, laboratory tests, and imaging techniques.
- Develop and implement treatment plans tailored to each animal’s needs, including medication administration, surgical procedures, and supportive care.
- Perform spay and neuter surgeries on all shelter animals. And other surgeries as needed.
- Perform animal restraint and handling with confidence to ensure safety during examinations and treatments.
- Administer veterinary critical care when necessary, including emergency interventions such as animal catheterization and aseptic techniques.
- Maintain detailed medical records and documentation adhering to veterinary standards and protocols.
- Support laboratory procedures by collecting samples and understanding laboratory experience relevant to diagnostics.
- Ensure compliance with all safety standards related to animal care, including aseptic techniques and infection control procedures.
- Participate in the shelter TNR efforts by spay/neutering community cats.
- Participate in community outreach efforts, vaccine clinics.
Qualifications
- Proven veterinary experience with a strong foundation in veterinary terminology, animal physiology, and anatomy knowledge.
- Demonstrated expertise in veterinary critical care, emergency procedures, and laboratory diagnostics.
- Skilled in animal restraint, handling diverse species including dogs and cats, with a focus on safety for both animals and staff.
- Experience in pet grooming, animal husbandry practices, and pet care routines is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in performing animal catheterization and applying aseptic techniques during procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with shelter staff and/or adopters regarding treatment plans and preventive care strategies.
- Strong understanding of laboratory procedures related to diagnostic testing.
- Excellent animal handling skills combined with compassion for animals of all sizes and temperaments. Physical Requirements:
● Physical ability to walk and or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required. Ability to bend and squat.
● Physical ability to engage in repetitive motions of legs, arms, and hands and to hear and see clearly.
Educational Requirements:
● Graduation from an accredited veterinary medical school
● License to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Pennsylvania, including DEA license.
