The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting
for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Dutch Harbor, Alaska!
What You Will Be Doing:
This 12-month full time permanent Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 position provides essential support to the management of commercial shellfish and groundfish fisheries in the Bering Sea–Aleutian Islands. Key responsibilities include:

Reviewing and editing ADF&G commercial shellfish and groundfish fish tickets to ensure tickets are accurate and complete, entering and batching electronic and conventional fish tickets in eLandings (interagency electronic reporting system for commercial fishery landings in Alaska), and generating final commercial fishery harvest reports using ADF&G’s OceanAK database as needed by ADF&G staff and other agencies. Primary commercial fisheries include Bering Sea–Aleutian Islands king crab, Tanner crab, snow crab, Dungeness crab, Pacific cod, sablefish, and rockfish.

Maintaining contact with processing plant fish ticket staff concerning reporting requirements, updates on new fish ticket reporting methods, and revisions/additions to state regulations.

Assisting fishery management biologists in tracking shellfish and groundfish fisheries through eLandings and OceanAK by verifying that all fish tickets have been received, verifying that the correct Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission (CFEC) permit card was used, and the management program is correct. When necessary, contact processing plant staff for any missing fish tickets and/or incorrect or missing information.

Assisting with determining if commercial fishing regulatory violations have occurred and if so, notify the supervisor for this position and, with guidance, contact the Alaska Wildlife Troopers (AWT) and/or National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Office of Law Enforcement (OLE). Notarize and provide copies of registrations, fish tickets, and any other pertinent information.

Assisting office staff by answering phones and assisting the public by providing information concerning fisheries management, regulatory information, openings and closures of shellfish and groundfish fisheries, as well as answering a broad variety of questions on commercial, subsistence, and sport fish regulations. Other miscellaneous duties include notarizing state documents, checking for mail, assisting office staff with commercial shellfish/groundfish vessel registrations, and dockside sampling as needed. Occasional opportunity to participate in at-sea surveys to collect shellfish/groundfish biological data.

This fulltime permanent position works year-round out of the Dutch Harbor ADF&G office in a professional setting that is open to the public. The daily work environment involves regular computer use, assisting the public both in person and on the phone, and effective communication and teamwork with office coworkers and other agency staff. The ADF&G office is scenically located on the shore of Unalaska Bay with local amenities and several hiking trails nearby. The office building also includes offices for the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, National Marine Fisheries Service, and United States Coast Guard.

Special Note:
A valid driver's license is required.
This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified, training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
