Role Overview:
The Senior Data Engineer will serve as the primary internal expert responsible for modern data engineering and database design across the Business Operations Technology (BOT) product line. This role delivers a unified, scalable, and high‑quality data foundation across multiple business areas—eliminating silos, ensuring performance, and strengthening consistency in database schemas, data models, pipelines, and architecture patterns.
In addition to building and operating data pipelines, this role owns end‑to‑end database design—from conceptual and logical modeling through physical implementation—ensuring data structures are performant, secure, extensible, and aligned with enterprise standards.
The Senior Data Engineer will design and maintain efficient data pipelines using SQL, Databricks, Airflow, and DBT, while enabling reliable ingestion, transformation, and orchestration of data across domains. Over time, this position may evolve into a data architecture leadership role, shaping BOT’s strategic data and database direction.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Engineering & Pipeline Development
- Design, build, and optimize scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using modern data engineering tools (SQL, Databricks, Airflow, DBT).
- Automate data ingestion, transformation, and validation to support both analytical and operational use cases.
- Ensure data pipelines are reliable, maintainable, and aligned with enterprise engineering standards.
Database Design & Data Architecture
- Design and govern database schemas, including conceptual, logical, and physical data models, to support both transactional and analytical workloads.
- Apply database normalization, denormalization, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization techniques to ensure performance and scalability.
- Define and enforce naming conventions, schema standards, data types, constraints, and referential integrity rules across databases.
- Design and evolve OLTP, OLAP, and Lakehouse data structures, balancing performance, flexibility, and cost.
- Lead the definition of data integration and database design patterns that promote reuse and cross‑domain consistency.
- Partner with architecture and product teams to align database and data architecture decisions with the broader technical roadmap.
Performance, Quality, & Governance
- Monitor, tune, and enhance data performance across ingestion, transformation, and compute layers.
- Implement best practices for quality assurance, including automated data quality checks, lineage capture, and validation processes.
- Contribute to documenting database designs, data dictionaries, schema evolution strategies, and engineering standards to support strong governance and long‑term maintainability.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Work closely with product teams, analysts, and data consumers to translate business requirements into scalable engineering solutions.
- Collaborate with DevOps and cloud engineering teams to ensure database schema deployments, version control, and infrastructure as code operate seamlessly within CI/CD pipelines.
- Mentor junior team members and foster a culture of best practices in data engineering across the BOT organization.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred.
Technical Expertise
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering or large-scale data pipeline development.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and modern data processing tools (Databricks, Airflow, DBT, Spark, or similar).
- Experience designing and maintaining production-grade data pipelines in cloud environments.
- Solid understanding of ETL/ELT principles, data modeling, distributed processing, and data orchestration frameworks.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex data issues across ingestion, transformation, and processing layers.
- Familiarity with DevOps concepts, CI/CD integration, and source-controlled data workflows.
- Expert T-SQL: Mastery of DDL, DML, CTEs, and window functions for complex data manipulation.
- Azure SQL Database: Deep knowledge of PaaS offerings, including scaling, security, and backup/recovery.
- Azure Data Factory: Experience with triggers, parameters, and linked services for orchestration.
- Automation: Proficiency in database management, elastic job agent, and infrastructure automation.
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills with a focus on long-term maintainability.
- Clear communicator capable of working effectively with cross-functional technical and business teams.
- Proactive, ownership-driven, and committed to high-quality engineering practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with enterprise data governance, metadata management, or lineage tools.
- Knowledge of Azure or AWS data services and cloud-native data patterns.
- Experience influencing architectural direction or contributing to enterprise-level data strategies.
