Supervisor — ER & Nursing Departments
Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital – Akron
Basic Function:
The Supervisor oversees both the Emergency and Nursing Care departments at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital, ensuring seamless operations, consistent patient care, and effective team performance across all shifts. This role provides direct leadership to Shift Leads, technicians, assistants, and students, fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous growth.
The Supervisor collaborates closely with the opposite-shift Supervisor, Director of Operations, and hospital leadership to ensure consistent processes, communication, and patient care standards throughout the hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
Department Operations and Patient Care Oversight
Oversee daily operations across the Emergency and Nursing Care departments, ensuring workflow efficiency, patient safety, and adherence to clinical standards. Monitor caseloads, staff assignments, and patient flow to maintain optimal care levels. Step in to provide hands-on clinical support as needed.
Leadership and Staff Development
Provide direct supervision, coaching, and mentorship to Shift Leads, technicians, assistants, and students. Foster a positive, professional environment focused on teamwork, growth, and high-quality patient care. Conduct regular check-ins to support skill development and evaluate performance.
Team Communication and Collaboration
Conduct regular team meetings or huddles to share updates, assign responsibilities, and gather feedback. Maintain open and transparent communication between all departments and shifts. Work closely with the opposite-shift Supervisor to ensure continuity of care and consistent implementation of hospital standards.
Scheduling and Staffing Management
Develop and maintain department schedules in coordination with the opposite-shift Supervisor. Manage coverage adjustments for call-offs, caseload surges, or absences. Ensure appropriate staffing for all operational needs.
Recruitment, Training, and Performance Management
Partner with HR and the Training Coordinator to recruit, onboard, and train new staff. Participate in performance reviews and corrective action processes. Collaborate in updating and enforcing hospital policies, SOPs, and quality standards.
Administrative and Compliance Duties
Monitor adherence to hospital policies, safety standards, and pharmacy compliance. Contribute to SOP development and ensure staff understanding and application. Support initiatives to improve efficiency, client communication, and hospital performance.
Cross-Department Coordination
Work closely with all departments and groups to maintain clear communication and workflow efficiency between clinical and non-clinical teams. Facilitate smooth transitions between day and night operations.
Resource and Supply Management
Ensure the availability of necessary supplies, medications, and equipment by communicating with the inventory team. Identify operational needs and contribute to process improvements.

Estimated Administrative Time: ~30%
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education: Associate’s degree or higher in Veterinary Technology or related field
Minimum Years of Experience:
· Minimum of 5 years in veterinary medicine, including emergency or critical care
· Minimum of 1–2 years in a leadership or supervisory role preferred
Licensure / Certification:
Registered Veterinary Technician preferred

Schedule and Expectations:
This full-time position requires flexibility to meet departmental needs, including weekends and holidays as applicable. Both positions report directly to the Director of Operations and collaborate closely with one another to ensure 24-hour operational consistency.
Wage:
$23.00-30.00 / hr - Based on experience
Shift differential for 3rd shift and weekends.
