Duties and Responsibilities:

Casual Assignment

Carleton University has a current opening for a casual animal attendant. Candidate must have the ability to work 1-2 weekends a month. The ideal candidate would also be available over holidays and occasionally Mon-Fri 8-4pm as needed to replace full time staff on vacation. This position may provide an opportunity for part-time to full-time hours eventually

The incumbent will perform the following duties and responsibilities:

Independently perform daily/weekend animal checks and husbandry for rodents and aquatic species
Document clinical cases and competently administer oral, topical and injectable treatments as directed by the veterinarian or supervisor
Wean pups following Carleton Universities Standard Operating Procedures
Able to lift and move large feed and bedding bags as required
Prepare cage and bottle supplies for daily husbandry
Restock supplies in all areas of the facility as required
Participate in laundry duties
Disinfect holding rooms and surgical suites
Monitor rodents post-operatively and assist with post-op care
Should be comfortable with euthanasia techniques and tissue collection
Must have effective oral and written communication skills and work effectively as a team member
Works with large equipment such as a cage washer
Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following physical qualifications:

Ability to consistently stand and sit for long periods of time
Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds
No known allergies to rats or mice

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technology Diploma
Asset of one-year experience in a rodent husbandry
