Position Summary

The Husbandry Technician I is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the daily care, welfare, and enrichment of laboratory animals in a vivarium setting. Under direct supervision, the technician performs routine husbandry tasks, facility cleaning, and animal observations while gaining experience in regulatory compliance and Good Documentation Practices (GDP). Key Responsibilities

Animal Care Support

Perform daily animal husbandry duties including feeding, watering, and cage changing

Observe and report any signs of illness or abnormal behavior to veterinary or senior staff

Support enrichment and contribute to a clean, low-stress environment for animals

Follow established protocols and SOPs for routine animal care

Vivarium Sanitation and Maintenance

Clean and disinfect animal housing, rooms, and equipment in compliance with health and safety standards

Maintain a clean and organized work environment

Properly use and dispose of PPE and handle biohazardous materials safely

Animal Receiving and Acclimation

Assist with preparation and housing for incoming animals

Support animal receipt processes and ensure accurate documentation

Help with enrichment and acclimation under supervision

Documentation and Training

Maintain accurate records of husbandry activities in accordance with GDP

Participate in initial and ongoing training related to animal care, SOPs, and safety procedures

Demonstrate ability to follow instructions and complete documentation thoroughly

Team Participation and Other Duties

Attend staff meetings and contribute to a collaborative team environment

Assist colleagues with shared tasks as needed

Perform additional duties as assigned, including weekend or holiday shifts on rotation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Willingness to work with laboratory animals and learn husbandry procedures

Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Reliable, respectful, and professional attitude

Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods

Commitment to animal welfare, safety, and regulatory compliance

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or GED

Up-to-date vaccination records (required upon hire)

Ability to complete training and demonstrate understanding of SOPs during onboarding

Experience with animals in academic, volunteer, or professional settings is a plus

Preferred Qualifications

Coursework or degree in Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary, Biology, or a related field

Prior experience in a vivarium, veterinary clinic, or animal care setting

Interest in pursuing AALAS certification (ALAT)

Working Conditions

This role takes place in a laboratory animal facility with exposure to animal allergens, cleaning chemicals, and biohazardous materials. The role requires regular use of PPE, physical activity including lifting and standing, and adherence to strict safety and documentation protocols. Weekend, holiday, and after-hours shifts may be required on a rotating basis.
