As an RVT at WAVES, your primary responsibility is to provide exceptional medical care and support to patients. Working closely with veterinarians and other veterinary care team members, you play a critical role in the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of animals in need of emergency or specialty department care.

Our Hospital is a supportive, collegial work environment and will provide training on emergency and critical care, advanced nursing techniques, anesthesia and other specialty procedures not routinely performed in regular practice.

Responsibilities:

Emergency Triage: Assist in the evaluation, assessment, and prioritization of incoming emergency cases based on their severity and criticality. Collaborate with the veterinary team to provide immediate care to animals in critical condition.
Patient Care: Assist in the care and monitoring of animals in the hospital, including triage, observation, and documentation of their condition. Perform routine procedures such as taking vital signs, administering medications, and providing proper nursing care.
Medical Procedures: Administer treatments, including intravenous fluids, wound care, bandaging, and taking and analyzing samples for laboratory testing. Adhere to proper protocols and maintain comprehensive medical records.
Diagnostic Procedures: Assist veterinarians in conducting diagnostic tests, such as bloodwork, radiography, ultrasound, and other necessary imaging techniques. Ensure equipment is properly prepared and calibrated for accurate test results.
Surgical Assistance: Prepare surgical suites, surgical instruments, and anesthesia equipment for procedures. Assist veterinarians during surgeries, including monitoring anesthesia, providing surgical support, and maintaining a sterile field.
Anesthesia Management: Induce, monitor and recover animals under anesthesia. Maintain comprehensive records of anesthesia administration, monitor vital signs, and ensure patients' safety throughout the anesthetic procedure.
Client Education and Communication: Provide information and education to pet owners regarding their pet's condition, treatment options, and post-visit care instructions. Maintain excellent communication skills to support clients during stressful emergency situations.
Equipment and Supplies Management: Maintain and manage medical equipment, ensuring instruments are clean, sterilized, and in good working condition. Report broken equipment promptly after troubleshooting the issue. Monitor inventory levels to ensure smooth operations in the hospital.
Team Collaboration: Collaborate and communicate effectively with veterinarians, fellow RVTs, veterinary assistants, and support staff to provide coordinated patient care. Assist in training and mentoring new team members.
Ongoing Professional Development: Stay up to date with developments in veterinary medicine, attend continuing education courses, and maintain RVT licensure and requirements.

Schedule:

9-hour and 12-hour shifts available
Set schedules that include 1 x weekend shift per week
Some overtime as required

Requirements:

Valid Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license in British Columbia.
Experience in an emergency or specialty veterinary setting is an asset
Strong clinical skills, with familiarity in anesthesia, radiology, and emergency protocols.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment.
Strong organizational and multitasking abilities to prioritize tasks and provide efficient patient care.
Commitment to compassionate and respectful treatment of both animals and pet owners.
Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as emergency hospitals operate 24/7.
Physical stamina and dexterity to handle animals, perform lifting up to 50lbs, and assist with restraint or transport when necessary.
