About this Opportunity

The Animal Care Services team includes Animal Health Technicians (AHTs), Registered Laboratory Animal Technicians (RLATs), and Animal Care Assistants (ACAs), all of whom work collaboratively to deliver animal care services. This position is intended to provide workload coverage in support of a grant-funded research project. Reporting to the Husbandry Coordinator, RLATs possess specialized knowledge in the husbandry of aquatic and mammalian species and apply this expertise to facilitate research and provide daily care for research animals. The RLATs also contribute to the development, implementation, and revision of standard operating procedures related to animal husbandry, ensuring efficient operations through effective collaboration and teamwork.
RLATs are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethical research and confidentiality, ensuring that all actions reflect our commitment to humane and responsible practices. Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of animal care, safety, and ethical research practices is essential.

This position works Tuesday - Saturday 7:30 - 3:30

The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $62,989 - $69,444 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: $81,896 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.

Job Requirements

An undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology) with a minimum of two years closely related experience with aquatic, reptile and mammalian species and their housing systems, including experience working in a regulatory environment with standard operating procedures (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

RLAT certification with the Canadian Association of Laboratory Animal Science (CALAS) within one year of hire. Maintaining certification status is mandatory.
Demonstrated strong organizational and client-focused service skills.
Superior communication and time management skills.
Proficiency in using office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
Ability to exercise discretion, discernment, and maintain confidentiality.

Preference may be given to applicants holding advanced relevant training and/or experience working in a post-secondary or research environment.

Working Conditions:

Modified schedule with potential for evening/weekend work; tertiary call-out for emergencies.
Lab environment with potential hazards, including Laboratory Animal Allergy; mandatory participation in UVic Allergy Awareness program and compliance with WorkSafeBC requirements (e.g., proper respirator use).
Physically demanding tasks: repetitive pushing, pulling, lifting, kneeling, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Handling of biohazardous materials and heavy items (e.g., fiberglass tank lids, glass aquaria).
Work in congested environments with racks, carts, and other personnel; adherence to safety protocols is essential.
Working with animals may cause emotional stress, Office of Research Services provides a safe environment by providing access to support and resources.
