Algae Technician

The following is the job description for the position of Algae Technician at Aquacultural Research
Corporation (A.R.C.). The responsibilities, duties and qualifications listed here are the minimum for successful performance of the position. However, other responsibilities, duties and qualifications could be added to the individual employee’s responsibilities.

Position Status

· Permanent, full-time hourly position

· Reports directly to Hatchery Manager

· Five days a week, holidays and weekends required

Position Overview

Aquacultural Research Corporation’s Algae Technician is a reliable, responsible and well-organized staff person assisting with culturing algae to feed the broodstock, larval and juvenile clams and oysters in the hatchery. This position will coordinate with the larval team to provide appropriate amount of food to feed required animals, clean tanks, prepare chemicals, and complete lab microscopy and sterile transfer techniques to evaluate algal cultures and maintain cultures. The Algae Technician reports directly to the
Hatchery Manager, is a team player, has excellent customer service skills and is willing to temporarily shift duties to other areas within the organization as needed.

Responsibilities and Duties

Evaluate all harvesting cultures (microscopic evaluation, cell density, water quality parameters)
Coordinate with larval team for food requirements
Send food to appropriate tanks, clean and reset for the afternoon inoculations
Mix and prepare chemicals for inoculations
Clean filters and routine maintenance
Daily and routine maintenance of ARC Algal stocks by picking, plating, sterile transfers
Media preparation of test tubes, flasks, etc
Water quality monitoring of well water, seawater for temperature, pH, density, etc
Assist with research and help explore new technologies
Perform other duties as directed, including but not limited to:

1. Repairing plumbing, pumps, lights, etc

2. Assist the larval team with broodstock maintenance, larviculture and downwellers

3. Assisting the nursery crew and field crew digging, planting and maintaining shellfish grants

Qualifications and Skills

· Minimum of 1 year related experience, preferred

· Minimum of a High School Diploma, (Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Marine
Biology, or a related field preferred)

· Excellent verbal and written communications

· Highly organized and attention to detail

· Team oriented

· Ability to work independently

· Must be able to lift 30-50 lbs and climb ladders
