The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is a well-established, fast paced animal shelter seeking full-time and part-time Veterinary Technicians to serve the animals in our care. The shelter is located in Wantagh, NY and serves the largest township in the country. We are looking for veterinarians and vet techs who are compassionate, team players and strong communicators. The ideal candidates for veterinarians would be comfortable and open to performing surgery, diagnosing and treating medical cases, examining and vaccinating all new animals and managing the care of all animals in the shelter’s care. COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

The duties are performed under the general supervision of a licensed Veterinarian. The work is reviewed by a licensed Veterinarian and appropriate shelter supervisors. The incumbent assists in surgery, euthanasia of animals, sterilization of instruments, etc. Supervises and conducts the training of support staff.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES (Illustrative Only)

1. Assists in the performance of surgical procedures.

2. Assists in the sterilization of instruments and operating suites.

3. Performs and assists in examinations, inoculations, medical treatments, and other related procedures.

4. Operates surgical suite, (including applications of intravenous injections, anesthesia, etc.).

5. Performs laboratory procedures for blood and parasite diagnostic tests.

6. Performs or assists in animal euthanasia (under the general supervision of a licensed Veterinarian).

7. Trains subordinate staff in specified procedures regarding the overall handling of animals.

8. Establishes and maintains medical records for areas of responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Thorough knowledge of laboratory methods, procedures, and practices.

2. Thorough knowledge of animal disease processes, transmissions, prevention, and disinfecting protocols.

3. Good knowledge of the safe and proper use of laboratory equipment, instruments, and materials.

4. Good knowledge of supervisory techniques and methods.

5. Ability to perform assigned tasks according to established procedures.

6. Ability to plan, direct, supervise, and evaluate the work and activities of subordinate staff.

7. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate, specialized records utilizing computerized software systems.

8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisory and subordinate staff members.

9. Ability to express concepts and ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Training and Experience

Two years of satisfactory full-time, paid experience as a Veterinary Technician in an established private, nonprofit, or municipal organization, or military animal care, training facility or setting.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Possession of a current, valid Veterinary Technician License, issued by New York State.

and

2. Possession of a current, valid Operator’s license, issued by the New York State, Department of Motor Vehicles.
