POSITION SUMMARY:

An Animal Care Services Medical Manager is responsible for the management of the welfare and medical needs of the animals in the care of Animal Care Services – both in the shelter and in foster homes. This involves establishing protocol and procedures for the medical care of the animals and disease control for all animals under the responsibility of the Columbus Animal Care Services Center. Provide guidance to staff on new procedures and their importance in keeping animals safe and healthy. Assist in inventory control of medical and shelter supplies. Establish a good working relationship with all shelter staff and foster care volunteers. Show appreciation for all foster homes to assist with foster home retention rate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Conducts intake exams, administers all necessary protocol and conducts daily rounds.
Prepare surgery list for all shelter and foster spay/neuter appointments.
Assist the Center Supervisor in their work with rescues and receiving shelters for transport by preparing available lists of animals for their review and confirming all offered animals meet their medical intake requirements.
Assist in inventory control of medical and shelter/foster supplies.
Ability to properly and safely handle a variety of animals of different temperaments and in various conditions of health.
Have the knowledge of proper administration of various medications, inoculations and humane euthanasia, or the ability to learn this information and put knowledge into practice.
Establish protocol and procedures for the medical care of animals both in shelter and in foster.
Establish a good working relationship with and show our appreciation for all foster homes in order to ensure their success retention in the foster program.
With the management team, coach, train, and inspire team members on proper disinfection techniques and disease prevention.
Maintains medical records and files in our shelter software program.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and work in a fast paced and stressful environment with minimal supervision.
Ability to be available on-call after hours for both shelter and foster emergencies.
Become an integral part of the shelter management team along with the Director, Operations Manager and Center Supervisor to coordinate best practices within the organization and work effectively and collaboratively with entire team in sometimes stressful situations.
Have a practical working knowledge of all operations, procedures, relevant ordinances, and become a reliable resource for team members as well as the community in the humane care and control of animals.
Communicate proficiently in person and in writing using English; a working knowledge of Spanish is not required but is a preferred qualification.
Ability to professionally answer the phone and interact with the general public as needed.
Participate in the daily feeding and cleaning of the animals in our care as needed.
Establish a working relationship with all local veterinary practices.
Perform any other related assignment, as assigned.

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

High school education or equivalent (GED or equivalent experience).
Hands-on experience with all kinds of animals preferred.
Vet Tech certification preferred; not required. Ability to study and become certified at Shelter’s expense required.
Strong written and oral communication skills in order to interact with all internal/external resources as well as keep accurate and timely records and internal controls.
Willingness to receive additional training as a medical manager and travel on occasion for training.
Must live in Bartholomew County or an adjacent county within 6 months of starting work at the City.
If an offer of employment is made, must be able to successfully pass background check, driving records check, physical/drug/alcohol screen.
Must be licensed to drive in Indiana or able to obtain license immediately after being offered employment and must have good driving record, sufficient for the city’s insurance coverage.
Have knowledge and experience of medical issues and contagions in a shelter environment or the ability to learn.
Successful completion and maintenance of certification of a Euthanasia Technician within first year of employment.

JUDGMENT:

Work is of ordinary difficulty and complexity and is performed under general or no supervision; difficult decisions must be made, sometimes quickly. A high level or organization and collaboration is a must.

RELATIONSHIPS RESPONSIBILITY:

Must be able to work with customers (internal & external) to keep service at the highest standard possible and must be able to work with large and small animals.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to more than ordinary conditions which include, but are certainly not limited to, stress and varied hours, cleaning chemicals and difficult-to-manage animals.
Hours will vary and days of work will vary; overtime work (over 40 hours a week, with comp hours accumulated) are sometimes required

Ability to safely drive and manage Animal Care Vehicles/larger than passenger vehicles.

RESIDENCY:

Must reside in Bartholomew County or adjoining county within six (6) months of employment.
