Job Description
Do you have a passion for fish and want to contribute to raising a large portion of the fish that fill our beautiful state's waters? If so, the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources is seeking an Assistant Hatchery Supervisor who will help producing fish and maintain hatchery facilities and equipment at the Kamas State Fish Hatchery in Kamas, Utah.

Job Duties

Propagating fish.
Feeding fish, using proper feed levels and feeding techniques.
Supervise 1 full time subordinates
Cleaning troughs, raceways, quiescent zones, and other water management structures.
Assisting receiving and egg disinfection operations.
Assist supervisor in feed ordering, planning production needs, and producing monthly reports.
Oversee and assist with necropsies of various fish groups.
Gathering biological data and entering data into databases and other agency programs.
Maintaining facilities, equipment, lawns, shrubbery, and hatchery grounds.
Inspecting facilities, machinery, equipment, systems, etc., to verify safety, maintenance, conditions, functions, and quality.
Assisting in the diagnosis and repair of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical problems.
Assisting with hatchery tours and helping with non-hatchery division projects.
Attending training in various areas of the division and hatchery operations.

Qualifications

Minimum/Required Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, Biology, or a closely related natural resource field, or directly related work experience equivalent.
Knowledge of and/or experience with coldwater fish culture.
Knowledge of and experience with fish production procedures, loading densities, fish stocking.
Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead or mentor junior staff
Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in calculating feed conversions, water flow requirements, and chemical dosages, such as formalin or iodine treatments
Mechanical Aptitude: Advanced skills in plumbing (PVC/HDPE), electrical troubleshooting, or small engine repair

Preference / Additional Qualifications:

Professional Experience: At least 2+ years of experience in fish culture or hatchery operations
Technical Expertise: Experience with advanced water chemistry or liquid oxygen systems
Health & Science: Proficiency in parasite identification and performing fish necropsies
Logistics: Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Tanker Endorsement
Communication: Experience leading educational presentations or public tours

Other Requirements

On-Site Residency: Because the health of the fish depends on constant monitoring of oxygen and water flow, this position has a mandatory on-site residency requirement.
License: A valid Driver’s License is required at the time of hire.
