Job Description:
The Animal Technician I supports day-to-day operations of the Animal Resources program under general supervision. This role involves providing routine and specialized animal care, ensuring facility cleanliness, and maintaining equipment in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The technician functions as a team member in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and may assist with training, documentation review, and improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Animal Care & Facility Maintenance
- Perform daily animal husbandry tasks, including feeding, watering, cage cleaning, and enrichment.
- Observe animals for health and behavior, report abnormalities, and assist with veterinary directives.
- Maintain appropriate room conditions per established protocols.
- Perform sanitization of animal cages and equipment; prepare clean cages for use.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot animal facility equipment (e.g., cage/rack washers, environmental monitoring devices).
Documentation & Compliance
- Accurately document all husbandry and facility maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with SOPs, Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), and regulatory guidelines (USDA, FDA, etc.).
- Support AR leadership in quality assurance tasks, including record reviews.
Team Collaboration & Training
- Actively contribute to a team-based, cross-functional work environment.
- Assist in onboarding and training of new or less experienced technicians.
- Participate in the evaluation and implementation of new processes or technologies.
- Take on specialized assignments under guidance from senior technicians or AR managers.
Health & Safety
- Follow company policies and all required safety protocols, including proper use of PPE (e.g., respiratory, hand, foot, eye protection).
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized workspaces.
- Perform physically demanding tasks including lifting (up to 50 lbs), standing for long periods, bending, squatting, and handling animals of various sizes.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; additional animal science education is a plus.
- 0–2 years of relevant animal care experience; prior lab animal experience preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent record-keeping ability.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
- Must not have known allergies to animals.
- Willingness and ability to work in physically demanding environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of animal care regulations (e.g., USDA, AALAS certifications).
- Proficiency in using facility equipment and software systems for data entry and tracking.
- Active participation in AALAS certification program is a plus.
