The Role:
Tassal is seeking a Hatchery Technician to join our Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Facility at our prawn farm in Proserpine. This role is essential in supporting the production of high-quality, disease-free broodstock as part of our P. monodon (Black Tiger Prawn) breeding program.
Working a 4/3 roster (40 hours per week, 10-hour shifts), you’ll assist in maintaining optimal hatchery operations under the guidance of the SPF Manager and Senior Technicians, ensuring strict biosecurity compliance and contributing to the success of our domestication program. This is a hands-on role that combines animal husbandry, technical skills, and a commitment to sustainable aquaculture.
Responsibilities:

Follow strict biosecurity protocols, including disinfection procedures and facility hygiene, to prevent disease outbreaks.

Assist in daily tasks including feeding regimes, health monitoring, and general care of prawns to ensure optimal growth and wellbeing.

Conduct routine water testing and system checks to maintain ideal conditions for prawn health.

Accurately document hatchery activities, including water quality, feed logs, and animal health observations.

Assist in the upkeep of hatchery infrastructure, tanks, and filtration systems.

Work closely with senior technicians and manager to troubleshoot issues and improve operational efficiency.

Adhere to workplace health and safety policies, aquaculture regulations, and company procedures.
Role Requirements:

Previous work in aquaculture, agriculture, or a related field is desirable but not essential—full training will be provided.

Willingness to learn water quality testing, microscopy, and basic hatchery operations.

Ability to follow procedures meticulously and identify potential health or system issues.

Capable of performing manual tasks in a physically demanding environment.

Strong work ethic, reliability, and a collaborative attitude.

Interest in aquaculture, animal health, and environmental responsibility.
