Position summary
Are you a motivated science professional committed to scientific rigor and excellence? Are you looking to develop your risk assessment and risk management skills in a government regulatory agency?
The Chemical Review team works to protect the health and safety of people, animals and the environment and support primary industries, biosecurity and trade by ensuring that registered agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemical products continue to meet legislated criteria related to safety, efficacy, trade, and labelling. The team works closely with expert scientific risk assessors to evaluate information about agvet chemicals and to prepare risk assessment reports and risk management recommendations which are the foundation of chemical review decisions.
As an experienced scientist and senior member of the team, the Assistant Director Chemical Review supports the Director of Chemical Review in interpreting diverse scientific assessments and preparing complex documents relating to those assessments.
The role includes management and supervisory responsibilities, stakeholder engagement and contributes to overseeing the administration of the Chemical Review team.

Our Ideal Candidate / Selection criteria
To be considered for this role you will need the following essential criteria:
Tertiary qualifications in agricultural, biological, chemical, or veterinary science.
Demonstrated ability to apply expert interpretation and analysis, and consider precedent, legislation, and policies and guidelines to make recommendations in regulatory situations involving a high level of complexity and sensitivity.
Demonstrated experience in preparing high-quality written materials for a broad range of audiences, such as scientific reports, documents for public consultation, and briefings to senior management.
Experience leading a small team working on projects of a technical and specialised nature.
Well-developed and demonstrated ability to manage complex and sensitive stakeholder relationships, to work together to identify opportunities and facilitate cooperation to achieve outcomes and resolve complex issues.
The folowing desirable criteria will also be assessed:
Post-graduate qualifications or relevant experience in scientific or technical disciplines.
Relevant experience with Australian agriculture or in a regulatory environment.
