Our farm produces a diverse range of crops, and we are looking for a dedicated and skilled Custom Spray Applicator to join our team. This position will serve both the farm’s needs as well as offering spray application services to other farmers in the local area. Job Description: As a Custom Spray Applicator - Farm Equipment Operator you will be responsible for applying crop protection products and nutrition to a variety of crops on our farm as well as for customers within our farming operation. You will work closely with the farm management team to ensure optimal crop health and yields while maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Spray Application: Operate and maintain modern, high-tech spray equipment to apply crop protection products (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides) and fertilizers to crops.
- Customer Service: Provide custom spraying services for local farmers, ensuring all services meet customer needs and standards, and communicating effectively with clients about application schedules and product recommendations.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and inspections on spraying equipment to ensure it is operating at peak efficiency, including checking for wear and tear, replacing parts, and keeping up with necessary repairs.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all applications, including product used, areas treated, weather conditions, and any other pertinent information for both the farm and customer fields.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, local, state, and federal regulations regarding pesticide and fertilizer application, including the safe handling and disposal of chemicals. Ensure the safety of the crew and surrounding environment.
- Field Scouting: Conduct pre-application field assessments to identify crop stress, pest issues, and areas needing special attention to improve overall crop health and yield.
- Customer Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, providing feedback and recommendations based on field conditions and application results.
- Technology Integration: Use GPS and mapping technology to ensure precise application and efficient use of resources.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a spray applicator or in a similar agricultural role is preferred.
- Valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (or the ability to obtain one within a specified time frame).
- Strong knowledge of crop protection products and nutrient application techniques.
- Familiarity with agricultural spraying equipment, including self-propelled sprayers and boom sprayers.
- Good mechanical aptitude for equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety guidelines and regulations.
- Excellent communication skills, both with customers and fellow team members.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A strong understanding of South-Central Wisconsin’s agricultural landscape and crop needs is a plus.
- CDL is preferred (or the ability to obtain one within a specified time frame)
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to operate large machinery for extended periods.
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions (rain, wind, heat).
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more and perform physical tasks related to equipment maintenance.
