Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Technical Duties
- Provide comprehensive nursing care, including physical assessments, monitoring hospitalized patients, and reporting changes in condition.
- Assist veterinarians before, during, and after medical, surgical, and dental procedures.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
- Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia, and assist with recovery.
- Perform dental cleanings and assist with dental procedures.
- Safely restrain, handle, and care for animals undergoing treatment or diagnostics.
- Collect, prepare, and process laboratory samples.
- Produce diagnostic radiographs (X-rays) and assist with imaging equipment.
- Provide wound care, bandaging, and post-operative nursing support.
- Assist during emergencies and perform patient triage as required.
Client Communication
- Educate clients on preventive care, medications, and treatment plans.
- Provide discharge instructions and homecare guidance.
- Update clients on hospitalized patients and perform follow-up communications.
- Answer client questions within the scope of practice and escalate as appropriate.
Hospital & Operational Support
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment.
- Clean and maintain kennels, treatment rooms, surgical areas, and equipment.
- Prepare surgical instruments and linen for sterilization.
- Ensure adequate stock of medical, non-medical, and linen supplies.
- Assist with inventory receiving, stocking, and organization.
- Support administrative and clerical duties as needed.
- Follow all clinic policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Project a professional and positive clinic image at all times.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to safely lift and handle animals and equipment, occasionally up to 50 lbs, and tolerate standing, walking, and bending for extended periods.
Qualifications
- Graduation from a CVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program
- Registered with the BC Veterinary Technologists Association (BCVTA) or recognized equivalent.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to multitask.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Understanding of workplace safety and fear-free handling techniques
- Comfortable working with anesthetic gases, pharmaceuticals (including controlled substances), chemicals, and X-ray equipment within Canadian safety standards.
- Small-animal experience is an asset; new graduates are welcome to apply.
