Mt. Parnell Fisheries Co., a 103 year-old ornamental goldfish and koi farm in south-central Pennsylvania, is looking for a full-time Aquaculture Technician/Fish Culturist. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in aquaculture production.
This position will support pond production, encompassing 300 outdoor ponds. This work will include pathogen diagnostics, treating pathogens, feeding ponds, harvesting ponds, etc. A combination of knowledge, experience, and interest in fisheries or aquaculture-related fields is a must. This position will be under the supervision of the Production Manager. On site training will be provided.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operations and Production:
- Assist production supervisor in maintaining 60 outdoor ponds
- Treat outdoor ponds for fish pathogens and aquatic weeds
- Assist seasonally with daily feeding of production ponds
- Check fish fry under microscope for pathogens
- Competence with algebra for calculating treatment dosages for ponds
- Assist in koi and goldfish spawning
- Assist in sizing, sorting, and packaging of fish
- Assist with fish harvesting from ponds
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries or aquaculture-related field, preferred but not required
- 2-4 years’ experience in Aquaculture /Aquatics, preferred but not required
- Willingness to learn about all aspects of the Aquaculture/Aquatics industry
- Ability to work independently
Administration:
- Maintain courteous and effective working relationships with customers, vendors, and other representatives of external organizations
- Work with maintenance/facilities personnel to keep operations running smoothly
Physical Demands:
- Employee is frequently required to lift and carry 30-50 pounds, and at times in excess of 50 pounds by themselves
- Employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel or bend. The ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time is required
- The ability to transport, handle, and place fish in their habitats
Benefits:
- Starting pay rate would be approximately $40,000 with potential for higher compensation as determined by experience and education
