Role Overview
As the Associate Director, Data Engineering, your role will focus on Data and business intelligence to enhance data-driven decision-making across the organization. This role is crucial for transforming data into valuable insights that drive business performance, support strategic initiatives and ultimately contribute to company mission to use science to improve and save lives around the world.
What will you do in this role:
Delivery Management
- Responsible for delivery of Data & BI initiatives for Procurement, HR, Compliance, Legal, Facilities, and Business Development.
- Act as primary point of contact for business stakeholders, translating functional requirements into technical solutions and roadmaps.
- Define and manage project scope, timelines, priorities, and risks, ensuring on-time, high-quality delivery.
- Facilitate requirements workshops with cross-functional teams and product managers, business analysts.
What should you have:
Functional & Business Skills
- Strong knowledge of process and data in at least two-three of the following domains, and familiarity with others:
- Procurement (e.g., spend analytics, supplier performance, sourcing, P2P)
- Compliance (e.g., controls monitoring, audit & risk reporting, policy adherence)
- Legal (e.g., contract lifecycle analytics, matter management reporting)
- Facilities (e.g., space utilization, maintenance, EHS metrics)
- Business Development (e.g., pipeline analytics, deal evaluation, portfolio performance)
- Ability to translate business questions into analytical problems and data requirements.
- Experience defining and operationalizing KPIs, metrics, and dashboards for senior leadership.
Technical Skills
- Understanding of data engineering practices, including:
- ELT/ETL design and development
- Data pipelines and data infrastructure
- Version control, release management, and deployment of datasets
- Working knowledge of:
- SQL for data extraction, transformation, and performance tuning
- Python and/or PySpark for data processing and pipeline development
- At least one major cloud data warehouse (e.g., Amazon Redshift, Snowflake)
- Large-scale data processing technologies (e.g., distributed computing, high-performance computing)
- Understanding and oversight experience with BI/analytics tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, or similar) for dashboarding and self-service analytics.
- Familiarity with orchestration and monitoring tools (e.g., Airflow, AWS Step Functions, or similar).
- Solid understanding of data modeling techniques (dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas) and performance optimization.
- Agile working knowledge and experience with related tools (e.g., Jira, DevOps, etc.).
Soft Skills
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills (verbal and written), able to bridge technical and business audiences.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a structured approach to tackling ambiguity.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without authority, align diverse stakeholders, and manage expectations.
- Track record of delivering high-quality results in complex, dynamic environments.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering, Information Systems, Data Sciences, Business Analytics or related quantitative field.
- (Nice-to-have) master’s degree or MBA with focus on Analytics / Information Systems.
Experience
- Typically, 8–12 years of experience in Data & Analytics / BI roles, including:
- Significant experience in delivering end-to-end BI and data solutions.
- Demonstrated techno-functional experience working with at least two of the following domains: Procurement, HR, Compliance, Legal, Facilities, Business Development (more is preferred).
- Proven experience in leading project delivery or acting as a Delivery Lead, Product Owner, or Engagement Lead for data/BI initiatives.
- Experience working in matrixed, global organizations and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders.
