Veterinary Assistant – Large Animal / Equine Focus
Location: Rural area just west of Concord, NH (20 minutes from urban amenities)
Employment Type: Full‑time (40 hours/week), some weekends and on‑call required
Practice Overview:
We are a new and expanding large animal veterinary hospital with advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities. Our caseload is predominantly equine, but we care for all large animals of any age, from wellness visits to advanced surgery, medicine, and critical care. Position Summary:
The Veterinary Assistant will assist licensed veterinarians in providing excellent large animal care. Duties will be performed under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, and all actions are considered the responsibility of the supervising veterinarian according to New Hampshire regulations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Clinical & Patient Care (as permitted under NH law and veterinarian direction):
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, diagnostics, and surgical procedures
- Safely restrain large animals for exams and procedures
- Administer oral medications, subcutaneous injections, and fluids under supervision as delegated by the veterinarian
- Connect and disconnect intravenous fluids under supervision
- Obtain and prepare blood samples and participate in basic laboratory services for which trained
- Monitor anesthesia under immediate supervision when delegated by the veterinarian
- Support routine animal care, patient comfort, and recovery monitoring
- Maintain hospital cleanliness and organization, including treatment areas and equipment
Client Service & Team Support:
- Communicate professionally with clients and team members
- Prepare patients and work areas for procedures
- Assist with record keeping, inventory, and general clinic operations
On‑Call & Weekend Duties:
- Participate in designated on‑call rotations and scheduled weekend shifts as part of the team
Legal limitations under NH law: Veterinary Assistants may not diagnose, prescribe, prognose, or perform surgery. All delegated tasks must be ordered and supervised by a licensed veterinarian.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Ability to work independently, be self‑motivated, and handle physically demanding tasks
- Prefer 2–5 years of large animal handling experience
- Veterinary experience not required — strong mentorship provided
Legal & Regulatory Requirements:
- Eligible to work in the United States
- All clinical tasks must be performed under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian in compliance with the New Hampshire Veterinary Practice Act and Administrative Rules governing veterinary assistants (NH Board of Veterinary Medicine).
- Must adhere to OSHA, USDA, and all applicable safety and animal care regulations
