Smithton Veterinary Service is offering an opportunity for a mid-year new graduate or recent veterinarian to join our long established and expanding mixed animal practice in northwest Tasmania. This role is ideal for a graduate looking to step into a supportive, well-resourced clinic with genuine mentoring and a strong focus on professional development.
Smithton Veterinary Service is a predominantly cattle practice with a strong dairy focus, alongside a small animal caseload. Our work is approximately 80 percent large animal and 20 percent small animal, with occasional sheep, goats, horses and wildlife.
Our dairy work includes routine farm visits and emergency work, herd health programs, bull fertility testing, consultancy in areas such as mastitis, reproduction and nutrition, lameness investigations, and both manual and ultrasound pregnancy testing.
You will be joining a highly experienced and supportive team of 9 veterinarians and 3 farm technicians. Our team includes a great mix of senior, mid-level and recent graduate vets, with most of our veterinarians having worked in the clinic for many years. Mentorship is a core part of how we operate, with all vets actively involved in supporting new graduates.
- This position is well suited to a mid-year graduate looking for a gradual and well supported transition into practice.
- On call is shared on a 1 in 8 roster, meaning approximately four nights per month. We utilise a tele triage service, so you are not disturbed for non-emergencies.
- New graduates do not start on call until they feel ready, commonly around the three-month mark. Once on call, you will always have a designated backup veterinarian available for both weekends and weeknights.
- You will be based in a modern, spacious, purpose-built clinic with excellent facilities and equipment to support both large and small animal work. This includes mobile cattle handling equipment, portable ultrasound units, bull fertility testing equipment, in house blood analysers, digital radiography, dental equipment and orthopaedic capability.
- We are actively involved in farmer education through seminars and courses, as well as broader industry engagement.
