The Opportunity - Student, Farm Worker
Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Smart Farm and supporting additional activities under the guidance of the Lead Hand, the Student, Farm Worker will ensure that their duties are performed in a safe, effective and efficient manner.
Key Job Functions:
Animal Care and Husbandry
-
Complete feeding, bedding, and animal care requirements daily

Assist with calving of the cow herd and lambing of the sheep flock (as trained and qualified)

Maintain accurate production, health, and treatment records
-
Support livestock movement and pasture rotations.
Crop and Field Operations
-
Support activities related to crop production
-
Assist with cropping field operations as required (and as trained/qualified)
Research and Learning Support

Assist with research project coordination on the farm
-
Set up and assist with student labs and learning activities
-
Use technologies and tools (e.g., HerdTrax, SheepTrax) to document important production data
Facility and Equipment Maintenance
-
Perform general cleaning and upkeep of farm facilities
-
Conduct minor maintenance of facilities and equipment
-
Check, repair, and construct fences as required
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
-
High school diploma plus additional coursework
-
1 year of related work experience on a farm and crop operation
-
Ability to stand and bend for extended periods of time and lift 50+ lbs
-
Concern and care about the animals general well-being
-
Excellent communication and customer service skills
-
Acts ethically, openly, honestly, and respectfully to build and maintain an environment of trust, safety, and well-being
Conditions of Employment:

Requires weekend and holiday availability
-
Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses
-
Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies, including wearing CSA approved safety footwear (not supplied) and successfully completing WHMIS certification training (provided)

Possess a valid Class 5 drivers license and clean drivers’ abstract
-
Available to work at times outside of regular office hours and weekends.
