Job Summary
Under the direction of the Assistant Director, the Lead Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) will be primarily responsible for the delivery of medical care and veterinary appointment flow, while playing a key coordinating role among staff within the wellness clinic environment at the expansion wellness clinic located at 632 Queen Street East. This position serves as an essential clinical liaison between veterinary staff, customer service agents, clients, and leadership, supporting communication, case management continuity, and a consistent standard of care. As part of a high-functioning team, the Lead RVT will contribute to decision-making around day-to-day client and patient needs, prioritization of care, and delegation of tasks to support patient flow and positive outcomes. The Lead RVT will also be responsible for the training and coaching of follow RVTs and Veterinary Assistants (VAs) within the community animal welfare team.
Job Duties
- Medication Administration
- Daily Husbandry Care
- Surgical Duties, to include but not limited to; Intubation, Induction, Monitoring, Surgical Preparation
- Medical supply inventory management
- Sample collections and diagnostics; including hematology, biochemistry, urinalysis, parasitology, and cytology
- Radiography
- Performing non-surgical dental procedures
- Safely and humanely restrain patients, striving for methods that cause the lowest amount of stress possible
- Physical Exams
- Client Communication and counseling of public pet parents
- Provide ongoing advocacy and support to patients
- Document patient details and exams using computer software program, with meticulous attention to detail
- Maintain equipment according to manufacturer instructions and ensure appropriate quality control measures are performed
- Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, and in-service training to further education, skills, and training
- Ensure commitment to quality, patient safety, and risk management initiatives
- Maintain a professional appearance, demeanour, and attitude at all times
- Be aware of and work within the regulations of all Toronto Humane Society policies and protocols
- Work in compliance with the provisions of the OHSA and its regulations, including understanding and adhering to the requirements of the Health and Safety Manual, and any other rules and regulations established by the Toronto Humane Society
- Other Duties as required in the day to day operation of the Society
Lead Responsibilities
- Triage incoming cases (e.g., planned and unplanned appointments, and help determine urgency and order of care in collaboration with the veterinarian
- Monitor and reassess patient status throughout the day, identifying cases requiring escalation or urgent intervention
- Oversee the day’s appointment schedule and ensure appropriate delegation of tasks alongside attending Veterinarian to RVT(s) and VA(s)
- Monitor patient flow and status throughout the day to ensure timely rechecks, diagnostics, and treatments
- Provide real-time training, coaching, mentoring and support to junior RVTs, VAs, volunteers, and students
- Promote and model adherence to protocols, infection control, and animal welfare best practices
- Foster, promote, support and drive inclusion and influence others to promote, embrace and progress Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at THS.
- Support stock control and treatment area readiness, including flagging resource or capacity concerns to leadership
- Provide feedback to supervisory staff related to operations, patient flow, or team dynamics that may impact care
Job Requirements
- Registered Member in good standing with Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians
- 5 years of Veterinary Technician experience, experience in clinic or high-volume medical setting preferred
- Minimum THS Level 2 RVT, Admissions
- Strong knowledge of all essential competencies required to maintain RVT status
- Capacity to work both independently as well as member of a medical care delivery team
- Commitment to maintain high levels of quality patient care
- Strong nursing care and biosecurity knowledge
- Demonstrated experience in coaching and mentoring fellow medical team members to support professional development and enhance quality of care
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to triage a wide range of medical presentations with appropriate urgency
- Comfort making on-the-fly decisions in collaboration with veterinarians and organization leadership to support timely care delivery
- Demonstrated ability to take clinical initiative and coordinate care in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- High level of comfort multi-tasking, managing evolving priorities and supporting a wide range of patients
- Proven ability to communicate effectively across interdisciplinary teams
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance
- Good computer skills, knowledge of EzyVet software an asset
- Organized with meticulous records maintenance skills and attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to change and maintain a positive mindset
- Demonstrates the ability to maintain poise and efficiency in stressful situations

- Involves the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy to moderately heavy objects and materials and some combination of climbing and balancing to include stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
- Physical ability to restrain larger pets when necessary
- Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal bites/attacks, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
